UCF holds ribbon cutting ceremony for District Energy Plant IV

May 26, 2018

Orlando, Fla. – On Friday, May 25th, the University of Central Florida hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for District Energy Plant IV (DEP 4), located in the northeast area of the university’s campus. The ceremony included remarks from William Merck, Vice President and CFO and Curtis Wade, Director of Utilities & Energy Services. Designed by RLF Architects and constructed by CPPI, the facility increases UCF’s energy capacity and is a physical representation of the university’s conservation-minded ideals.

Sitting on 13,000 square feet near the College of Engineering, DEP 4 was built to function both as a chilled water plant, with capacity for 8,000 refrigeration tons, and as a hands-on teaching tool. With this in mind, educational features include color-coded pipes to better exhibit the facility’s functions to students, and data collection from the building that can be used in various courses and student projects.

The construction and operation of DEP 4 align with UCF and CPPI’s dedication to environmentally friendly practices. During construction, 92% of waste was recycled instead of being sent to landfills. Most building materials were sourced locally, and 30% were made of recycled content.

The machines housed within DEP 4 are energy efficient, which reduces the cost of operation by 33%. Low-flow showers, sinks, and lavatories are instrumental in saving hundreds of thousands of gallons of water annually. The building achieved LEED Gold certification, conforming to BD+C v2009 standards.
